They lived in Pierre, where Geraldene ran a small motel with her father, Walter Madison. It was during this time in his life he met and married his beloved wife, Geraldene Madison. He then went on to work on construction where he participated in the building of the Yellowtail Dam and the Oahe Dam. Upon his returning home he took a job in the fields. He went to the Army as one of two needed to fill his county's quota for the draft in 1955, where he served Korea. He was an avid hunter throughout his life.

He grew up in Bowdon where he learned to work and play hard. Jerome was born in Bowdon, North Dakota to Henry and Leola (Werner) Stroh.
